Timeline Note glitch?

I am working in a mac lab at the institution where I teach, and my students and I are experiencing something very strange. Sometimes, when we want to draw in the Timeline Notes, twhat appears instead is a copy of the entire TVPaint UI. It is almost like we have it selected as an anim brush, which we absolutely do not, but that is how it behaves. It makes writing in the Timeline Notes impossible. Any advice would be much appreciated!
My instructor computer:
Processor: 3.2 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon W
Graphics: Radeon Pro Vega 56 8 GB
Memory: 32 GB 2666 MHz DDR4

to be clear ...you get this on Mac machines?
do you know the mac Os version etc.?
The school i work also has macs but so far i haven't encountered it, but then i don't use the timeline notes intensely,
What are some of the dimensions of the project? filesize, pixeldimensions, layer number?
