Pencil brush like 'Maman Pleut des Cordes'

Post by breadsword »

Hello TVPaint forum,

Ever since the film came out, I've been fascinated by 'Mum Is Pouring Rain' (Maman Pleut des Cordes), directed by Hugo de Faucompret and animated by an exceptionally talented group of animators.
The movie uses a very interesting type of brush, which the director describes as "handmade feeling pencil-scratched lines" and I know for a fact the film is animated in TVPaint.
Since I love the animation style, I would love to recreate this brush. It looks like a very thin mechanical pencil, but still with a firm line. The animators are thus able to draw the characters with a thinner line style, while maintaining the form and hand drawn feel, even in the final look.

While trying to figure out how to create this brush, I stumbled upon another work in progress of the film, very informative, which gave me these hints:

I've tried recreating these settings, but still don't quite get the general form of the brush:

How would I be able to recreate the brush as close as possible? Thanks in advance for all the help, and a big recommendation to everyone to watch the film, it is wonderful!

Kind regards,
- Kevin

Looks like an Animbrush to me. Several bitmaps, sorted by size, animation controlled by pressure.

Hi Slowtiger,

Thanks for your quick response! I'm glad to know it's an Animbrush. What do you mean by 'bitmaps sorted by size'? Is that how I make the pattern for this brush?

You'll find lots of brushes in the Content Sharing section, test them and re-engineer!

its a custombrush but not an anim as you can see it only has one frame (it says 1/1 in the bottom of the custompanel)

because the brush is not centred the Randommized Angle connection results in this nice rough effect, clever use of the connection options!

Thank you Peter! It's good to know how the brush functions now. This is absolutely fantastic, I'll defenitely be using it well!
I'll mark this topic as solved :)

All the best,
