Working on animatik on 1280x720, 4fps and still lagging

Post by kannoper »

Is there a way to help with performance?
I'm on windows 11 and this is a brand new PC I installed the software on.

Hello, could you post a short video of the lag, please?
Also, what is your machine's hardware?

I don't think a video is going to explain much. It's just that the file is really small, yet each action, like opening image library folder, closing a window etc takes 15 seconds of pause before it performs, and I doin't think it happened as much on my previous PC that was 6 years old and weaker too.

Wow this is not the kind of lag I was expecting, does this happen in other drawing software too? Regardless of whether you are using your tablet or mouse?

I'm using mouse rn since I work with scans of pencil drawings. I don't have any other drawing software installed on this PC yet, but I have music software (FL studio), it's pretty demanding and I didn't experience that much lag with it.

In TvPaint I think opening image from library is the worst, but even simple actions like moving from clip view to project view gives few seconds of lag that I didn't have on the old pc

The only thing that comes to mind is to try applying Scan Cleaner to the scanned pencil drawings. (if you did not already do that ?) Removing the white/light grey pixels of the scanned paper will make the file size lighter and therefore less likely to have lag.

But the severity of the lag you describe (closing a window takes 15 seconds!) points to something other than an excessively large file size. I've worked with files that are 8 GB without lag (over 8 GB starts to get laggy for my system, but I only have 16 GB of RAM on my computer , whereas you have 32 GB of RAM.)

Weird, could you check the Task Manager for TVPaint's resource consumption while doing basic operations, please?

The CPU is at 1-2% when I click here and there without lag, when I click on something that causes lag it goes up to 12%, but after the lag is finished it comes back to 2%.
I don't know what should the memory say, but it looks like it says circa 10,000 MB with little changes.

Oh and I should note one more thing, the lag doesn't happen every time I click on things, it seems to stop when I perform similar actions one after the other. I mean that if I move cursor to a point on a timeline then there's lag, but the second and third and fourth time I do it the lag is gone.
Although for the image library the lag is happens every time and it's the longest.

@D. T. Nethery Thanks! I'll try that, I wasn't cleaning them before, was only changing the colour sliders. But like you said, it shouldn't be the main cause.

Hello,

Thank you for the additional information.
What type of storage do you use? Are you working on a project on your local drive? If so, is it a SSD or a hard drive?

I work on local storage. I only have one drive and it's SSD.

I was hoping for an advice on how to help with performance. Like, how to set memory in preferencers and thing like that

What are your current settings under Memory in the Preferences ? How big is the file ? You mentioned the animatic is "1280x720, 4fps" (did you mean 24 fps ?) but what is the actual project size in MBs or GBs ?

Screen shot of my memory settings below. I don't notice any lag, until my project size grows over 6 GBs , then I may get some lag, but usually not debilitating lag (except for using some of the "heavier" FX modes such as Warp Grid , Inlay Texture, Volumetric Lighting , those will become mostly unusable when the file size is larger than 6GB. (fortunately I rarely use those type of FX).
In some cases I can still work on projects that are 12 GB , but playback is choppy, even with the Preview quality set low.

My file is 3.6 GB big and it's very small animatic (it has 3 minutes as for now) with basically one image per shot. It's 4 fps, not 24, because I was trying to make is as small as possible so I could hope to be able to work.

Because you're running Windows 11 , I wonder if this would help :

I have 32 GB RAM (27.9 GB usable), so not sure if this is solution. Do you think I should change the undo parameter? I think I lowered it hpoing it would help performance
