particles with different gradients

I found some pretty nice settings with the particle generator, however, one option doesn't work as expected.
I can have several particles with different settings in one emitter and name them, each having a different shape as source. I can use the same source to make differently behaving particles. But it seems I cannot apply different gradients to each of them, it's always the last one I set for all particles alike.
Additionally, the bin in the gradients panel doesn't work correctly: neither do the names I give them show up, nor do the ones I load into it show. Can we have a look into this?
(Also the option "link to emitter" is not covered in the manual.)
