Speedfill

Post by Milton Gray »

Hello. I recently purchased TV Paint 11 Pro. My iMac computer is OS 10.15.6 Catalina with 32GB of memory, one terabyte of SSD storage, and 4K resolution. My Wacom Cintiq Pro 24 has 4K resolution. My Cintiq and my iMac are completely new and dedicated solely to my TV Paint 11 Pro. I have been unable to get the Speedfill tool to fill in colors. Example: I made some line drawings on one horizontal row in the Timeline, and then clicked on "New" in the Timeline, prompting a pop-up box of selections, and selected "Colo & Texture Layer", which added a new horizontal row below my row of line drawings. This deactivates the Paint Bucket, but adds a new icon called Speedfill. Then, with the Speedfill icon selected, I selected a color and then moved my mouse or stylus to my line drawing and marked an area in it, but the space did not fill with color. Instead, each time I just got a color line accented with tiny checkerboard squares, and I tried this many times. Is there another step I need to take to activate Speedfill to fill the enclosed area in my line drawing?

Hello Milton,
No there ain't, you are doing this correctly it seems.
But bear in mind the shape should be "closed enough" for the speedfill function to work properly (example below).
Please have some more tries at it, and if you still encounter any difficulties let us know. We will assist.

I must have tried at least fifty times, each time trying a different way in case there must be an unstated way to approach this. And all my areas were completely enclosed. I did in fact just return to my upper horizontal row of line drawings and quickly and easily filled each area with color using Paint Bucket. And this raises another question: Only (as far as I know) in the "Colo & Texture Layer" is there an option to "Edit Colors", to build a composite from which to quickly fill in the colors of subsequent line drawings. So this would seem to make the "Colo & Texture Layer" and the Speedfill option very important to be operational.

The best advice I can give you at this point is to get familiar with the difference between using the Paintbucket fill method vs. CTG (Color & Texture Generator) method.
Both methods are covered in the user manual, but fortunately there are also some good video tutorials, too.

But just for reference , here is where to look in the user manual (if you don't like reading through the user manual, just skip ahead to the video tutorial links) --

Flood Fill Tool-
https://www.tvpaint.com/doc/tvp11/index ... -floodfill
(keep in mind that there are a few different tools that can be used for flood fill coloring, including :The Paintbucket, Filled Rectangle, Filled Freehand Stroke.
For each of those Flood Fill tools the tool parameters of Range, Expand, Gap Closer can be adjusted as needed.)

The Concept of "Fill Inside" using Flood Fill tools :
https://www.tvpaint.com/doc/tvp11/index ... ill-inside

Coloring with CTG layers is different than using Flood Fill tools like the Paintbucket. Start here for CTG:
https://www.tvpaint.com/doc/tvp11/index ... l-concepts

You should look at each section in Chapter 7 of the User Manual:
7.) Colorize and Texturize and Animation

If your preference is to use Flood Fill tools for coloring (such as the paintbucket tool) , here is a good tutorial to start with:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5GBwEE6jgE

And here is another tutorial on coloring in TVPaint with the paintbucket or other flood fill tools:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ny_g5yWJNCM

This one covers both Paintbucket (flood fill) and CTG -

There are more tutorials out there (just search YouTube for "TVPaint Coloring" )

Here is an introductory tutorial on using the CTG method of coloring:

Creating a Palette for CTG layers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lol9E4EJ_rU

CTG coloring can be a bit tricky to learn at first , but once you've got the hang of it , it can be much faster than traditional flood fill coloring with the paintbucket. (and there is more flexibility for changing or adjust the colors of the character palettes (color models) afterwards if need be ... however, with paintbucket filling you can also use the FX Stack Color Adjust or Color Replacer FX to make changes to the color layers. https://www.tvpaint.com/doc/tvp11/index ... r-replacer

You can find some .tvpp source files to practice with here : Contents and Examples (there is a download link on that page to download the source files)

More TVPaint source files are available here (scroll down to the bottom of the page ... each of the thumbnail images is a link to download a source file ) -
https://www.tvpaint.com/v2/content/arti ... tivity.php

On that page you can watch the film "Journey Through Creativity" made entirely in TVPaint , and watch the "Making-of Journey Through Creativity" which shows the various techniques and tools used in the making of the film. The source .tvpp files are useful, because you can download them and open them up in TVPaint on your computer , to see how the layers are ordered , how the various colorization effects and other effects are applied.
