TVPaint often freezes for a while

Sometimes hitting escape works to get it back to work. Or hit escape multiple times.

What could be causing this?

I *think* it usually happens when switching applications. But also after playing the animation. Even on very simple files. Have not been able to reproduce it consistently, but it happens a few times a day for sure.
