Loading problem

Post by Simon W Edmondson »

Working with an Imac under OSX 10:15.5 and TVP 11.7, using a Cintiq 19.

I was using TVP most of yesterday and dutifully saved the project regularly throughout. Saved and quit before going to bed. Awoke this morning to start working again but, Non of the three saved iterations of the scene in the project will load up. TVP opens, but then hangs and becomes unresponsive, the 'beach ball of destiny' appears and nothing further happens until I finally have to use Force Quit to exit. The same thing happens when trying to load earlier scenes completed some weeks ago.

Can anyone kindly suggest what might be causing the problem and, most importantly, how it might be fixed?
Thank you for your time and help

Hello Simon, were the files being saved directly on your computer or on some external hard drive/cloud/server?
Could you send me one of these iterations via Google Drive or WeTransfer in a PM so I can try opening it myself, please?

Dean.
Thank you for your reply and offer of help.
It was saved on an ext HD, permanently attached to the Imac.
Be happy to send one but not sure how to go about it as I've never used Google Drive or We transfer ?
Version 003 is 22.4mb in size.

WeTransfer is the fastest one as you don't need to be connect to an account. You can just upload your work and send me the generated link.

The problem seemed to have gone...
Although I'm hoping that is not "famous last words" on my part.

I installed TVP om another mac, copied the 'wonky' file onto that and,
it opened.
and played with no apparent problems.

Went back to the original Imac. Tried to open a much older file from a different project, not expecting success.
It too worked,
Tried some other old projects. They all worked as well so, encouraged, tried the wonky file again. It worked.

Just spent the afternoon working away on it and it is behaving. So hoping there will be no recurrence next time.
I have been plagued by intermittent problems recently, not just with TVP. Most frustrating.

OSX 10.15.7 Imac 8gb Ram

Unfortunately, the earlier problem has returned, and previously valid files will no longer load on the machine on which they were made.
Working on the current project yesterday and, once again, dutifully saved in successive iterations as it progressed. All seemed well until this morning, when trying to open the last version to export an image sequence.
The TVP file initially loaded but then hung and the file did not open properly.
Mindful of the workaround last time, I copied the project file onto a flash drive and tried it on another machine. It opened fully, was saved and brought back to the Imac.
Sadly, that did not cure the problem.
Tried again on the other machine, which again opened fully, saved that as another iteration, and returned to the Imac. No joy. It hung during the opening process.
Can anyone kindly suggest a solution to the problem?

simon

One curiosity.
When saved on the Imac with TVP 11.7.1 stn; the file was saved at 56.8mb

When saved on a mac Mini with an earlier TVP the files saved at 144.6Mb.
No changes to the project had been made, just saved out as a different iteration.

I'm sorry that I have no advice to offer on the problem of the files not opening properly , but regarding the issue of the differing file sizes (56.8mb vs. 144.6Mb) is it possible that in your TVPaint running on the iMac you have 'TVPP Compression' selected in the Preferences , but in the TVPaint you have running on the Mac Mini the option for 'TVPP Compression' is not selected ?

Thank you for your helpful reply. I will have a look at the preferences.
It has been a frustrating afternoon.

Ps
Just tried to have a look at the preferences and, it was greyed out, unavailable to access.
Tried to open Earlier projects, all seem to hang.
Started a new project with a few squiggles and saved. It opened fully afterwards.
Just tried to reopen the project giving trouble earlier...
and it opened fully !!!!
Very frustrating.

Preferences still not available though ?

Hello Simon, do you mean that your Preferences menu in TVPaint has some options greyed out?
Could you maybe post a screenshot of this, please?

Thank you for your reply.
Its not just options within the preferences tab that are greyed out, but the whole preferences option under the menu.

It is strange and confusing that there is a greyed-out 'Preferences' under the main TVPaint Animation menu , but the actual Preferences are accessed from the Edit menu.

So why are TVPaint Preferences confusingly located under the Edit menu instead of in the usual place to access Preferences as in all other drawing and animation programs ? This has always been a mystery to me.

I agree that its behavior should be made redundant with the Edit menu's Preferences item, I just added it to the to-do list.

Thank you for pointing that out, I wouldn't have known otherwise.
I shall have a look at the compression type straightaway.

Just had a recurrence of this problem.
Working on scene yesterday, duly saved and Imac shut down properly.
Tried to open again today. No joy. It just hung and had to force quit again.

Tried it on the other machine ( a mac mini ). It opened and played. 'Saved as' onto Flash drive, returned to Imac in anticipation.
Again no joy. It just hung.
Tried all the other 'save as' iterations, with the same result.

came back and reread this thread, so tried to open an old, much smaller file.
It worked, and now that it has, the file giving trouble earlier has opened too.
The only changes made was to look in preferences under 'edit' ( as suggested earlier in the thread ) but this time setup a 'temporary files' folder on the int Hard Drive.
A frustrating start to the afternoons work.
