Re: Show us your workspace!
http://www.slowtiger.de/examples/room1.jpg Here's where I spend my days. 1: the Cintiq, the (hypothetically) free space in front of it used to place it in tilted position to draw. 2: behind this is my G5 PPC Nr 1, the workhorse. I should sit on the red chair, but I had to take the pics. 3: here's t...

Re: Coloring on seperate layers
My way of colouring usually goes like this: 1. Create animation line drawing. 2. Duplicate that line drawing layer 3. Colour the bottom line layer with solid colours (note to self: don't forget to switch off paper!) At this point I save the file under a different name. Why? Because here I have the l...

Me too, now.
Just ordered my upgrade, PayPal says it will take up to 7 days until the money arrives at TVPs side, but I hope this is OK anyway.

Re: Overwhelmed but want to learn
I was about to write a short description of the bare necessities for animation, but then took a look into the tutorials and found that my Mirage experience is a bit different from the actual TVP version, so I skipped that. Jimmy: read the tutorials 1 and 2 and you are ready to start. It looks pretty...

Re: rotoscope critique/aesthetics
I wrote quite a lot about A Scanner Darkly , so I will not repeat it here. My main point is: which part of your story cannot be told without rotoscoping? What dimension does it add to your story? There is a niche for the use of rotoscoping in filmmaking as well as there's a niche for hand-held camer...

Re: Tutorials
I think what we need isn't so much a new set of tutorials but a cookbook -- kind of like a more in depth FAQ kind of thing, like 'How do I create an animation on twos' or 'How do I create a pan', 'how do I do lip-synched animation if I have an audio file' -- real world solutions for real problems. ...

Re: Tutorials
(If a program is so hard to grasp that only with a step-by-step tutorial I'm able to achieve small things, then it's not a good program.) One of the best manuals I ever used was the one for Freehand 4.0. It not only listed every possible function (as all manuals do), but it had a bunch of everyday p...

Re: Python scripting
I'm not much of a programmer, but LUA is used in Anime Studio, and some users did amazing things with it. There's a forum section for that here: http://www.lostmarble.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=12.

Re: Optimal frames per second for digital output
It all depends on which distribution you want. Film is always 24 fps, video is 30 fps or 25 fps, depending on your location. You could even do something just fo the computer screen, 15 fps or 30 fps. If you work professionally, you need to get used to the idea of a high quality master format from wh...

Re: rotoscope critique/aesthetics
I've just seen a very good movie done with rotoscope: "Chainsaw" by Dennis Tupicoff. (It just won the Grand Prize at the 54th Oberhausen International Short Film Festival last week.) He works in an "animated documentary" style, so rotoscoping fits perfectly into his storytelling ...

Re: Digital restoration of old animation
Don't expect too much from this. You will not get more than your usual VHS quality, and likely even less. What's possible is: to get rid of a general colour tint (but you want to keep this), and to increase the contrast between pencil line and paper. I don't advise to try to sharpen the lines in any...

Re: Background for a new film
Last week when I was in Stuttgart I had the pleasure to meet Joanna Quinn who gave a short lecture about her way of work. Apart from her being a genius when it comes to pencil drawing, one advice seemed to be quite helpful. She talked about sketching her animation in thumbnail size first, after stud...

Re: Background for a new film
I wouldn't call myself an animator if I weren't able to do that multiplane stuff by hand and make it look right ... but of course I'll give that thing a try.

Re: Background for a new film
Uhm, maybe next month? I'll start the whole thing with a squirrel, which is always fine. Then a picnic will be held. I've already finished scripting, because my script reads like: "Squirrel, nut, forest. Two people, picnic. And then stuff happens." You see, elabourous preparation is everyt...

Background for a new film
completely done in Mirage, in HDTV resolution. I like the "pencil" settings I made. The forest is done in 10 levels for a nice multiplane effect.
