Autcomplete hand-drawn animations

Post by schwarzgrau »

This video is from SIGGRAPH Asia 2015. The motion it produces is pretty uncanny and looks morphed. I don't think such a technique will ever be popular among "real" animators, but nontheless it's pretty interesting.

I do think the movement looks too "computery" (morphed/tweened/interpolated) , but I can see using something like this for putting together a quick animatic that needs to simulate movement for the benefit of clients who can't understand how to read still storyboard panels (not unlike the way people use AfterEffects puppeting to simulate movement for an animatic) . Then after the animatic timing is approved animate it for "real" in TVPaint. Of course I'm sure this will appeal to people who are trying to eliminate having to do a lot of drawings , but want something that still looks "2D" ... morphing "tweened" animation doesn't seem to bother some people although I find it hard to watch.
