Post by ten_zero »

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I need help and an infromation about the drawing way of Nethan Fowkes who is animator and drawing many concept arts of "How to train your Dragon" and "Shrek" series etc. at DreamWorks.

Here is a his Youtube video :

Question:

1. What does the drawing process official call ? Who is Mr. Reilly ?
2. Does the Occident animation basic classes teaching this ?
3. Can I learn this process by textbook ( hopefuly instore Amazon ) or Apple iTunes U ?

Google showed me 3D Total "Art Fundamentals" and the article introduced me "it is a Reilly technic".
However I could not found Reilly WHO.

Thank you.

p.s.
In my opinion most famous self-taught basic method of human drawing is "speed live drawing" or "plaster bust drawing" and reproduce all pages of Andrew Loomis "Figure Drawing" & "Drawing the Head & Hands".

Yes, Fowkes comes from the tradition of Frank Reilly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_J._Reilly" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), who was highly influential in the early to mid 20th century at the Art Students League of New York. Reilly's approach or method was based on the head/figure as a series of abstracted dynamic rhythm lines -- each part of the form is influenced by one or more other dominant parts. The advantage of this method is that it gives the results a unified, graceful look, instead of being a collection of disconnected parts. I'm a big fan of the Reilly method.

Fred Fixler (http://www.fredfixler.com/index.php/cave-22/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) was Reilly's student and has preserved some good notes about the process on his web site.
Doug Higgins 9http://dhfa.net/reillyschool/), another Reilly student, has written his own adaptation of Reilly's notes, which can be purchased from his web site.
