animation

Post by deloresi »

I just lost about six months of animation? Oh jeez. Okay well, I did a windows update last night. I woke up this morning and turned on my computer and the background was its default wallpaper. I thought that was odd. I noticed some of my icons were missing, so I restarted my computer. When it booted up, the folders reappeared, but my animation folder was completely empty. It is the ONLY folder that is empty. Everything else is fine. I think I'm loosing my mind.

I deeply sympathize, and it might seem most unhelpful for me to tell you that now is the time for you to get a backup drive, but it's either that or stop making animated films (or writing a novel, or composing a symphony) and go for a career at your local lumberyard.

The pocket size external hard drives like iOmega cost little above $ 100 and can hold up to 2 GB. From youngmonkey.com I bought for about $ 25 a flawless and most clever plugin called Backup, with which I backup every few minutes whatever I'm working on just by pushing the save button -- it'll actually backup your files to two separate drives to be double safe. Whenever I leave the house I carry the HD with me.

But this might be of more comfort to you (and it never fails): whenever you loose all your work and you have to start all over again, you end up doing it twice better than you had it the first time.

Don't do anything else on that machine. Switch it off. The computer didn't erase your data, it just lost the information about where it is.

Take your hard drive to a specialist in data recovery. Immediately.

Slowtiger is right. The data is still there. There is software available that will retrieve lost and deleted files for you, but the safest option is definitely to take your drive to a specialist.
